On the afternoon of Feb. 23, the CF Lady Patriots’ softball team played and won two games at home against Polk State College in a doubleheader.

The game started out overcast with a light drizzle, but when the girls and their coaches huddled up before the game, the sun began to peak out from behind the clouds. CF went on to win both games with a score of 7-0 in the first game, and a score of 8-0 in the second game.

The two wins brought the Lady Pats’ overall record to 19 wins and three losses. They also have six home wins under their belt, coupled with two home losses.

Shayne O’Connell, who was recently named Pitcher of the Week by the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), showed up with three fast outs in the first inning. O’Connell was a standout with her fast and consistent pitching. Polk State could not keep up.

By the fourth inning, the Eagles were left attempting simple bunts and base hits. Brooke Barlow, who plays first base, prevented Polk State from advancing to second base.

The Lady Patriots showed what they were made of in the third inning by scoring four runs with a double by Barlow and a follow-up homerun by Destinee Lizzmore. Other than Lizzmore, Barlow and Joanna Muldoon also hit homeruns in the first game of the doubleheader.

Head Coach Kevin Fagan said, “Great D! Don’t give any back!”

The Lady Pats did not disappoint, holding the Eagles to zero runs in the two games.

Two Lady Pats’ fans and spectators, John Kreps and Crystal Anderson, try to come to as many softball games as they can, just to enjoy a good game of softball.

Anderson said, “We don’t have any kids out here, but I just enjoy watching these girls play.”

The next-scheduled doubleheader for the Lady Pats will take place on March 3 against Florida Southwestern—Game One starts at 2 p.m., Game Two at 4 p.m., respectively.
